I love Indian food, I mean, Ill even eat and enjoy the frozen, tv-dinner style Indian dishes you can get at the grocery. But, of course, its always better fresh. I had a really great portion of Chicken Saag, which for those you arent familiar, is Chicken with spinach and cooked with a touch of cream.
The spice level is the place where you really personalize it though. The levels range from 1-5, and you can basically choose how hot you like it that way. Ive chosen wrong before and ended up having a hard time finishing a really tasty but way too spicy dish before. This weekend I hit the nail no the head by getting a spice level of 3 for the Chicken Saag though. And since the portions are incredibly generous, I was also able to heat up the leftovers yesterday for lunch. And man, it was just as good! This is coming from someone who does not usually care for leftovers, especially from restaurants.
And its also important to note, that although the best restaurants, especially Indian ones, can be found in the more urban areas of Cincinnati, Clifton is best, your local suburbs are starting to serve it up too. This is a good spot all the way down in Florence, KY.
Well, I hit the old 29 today. Ive been saying that I narrowly avoided 30 yet again. The truth is I could care less if I am 30 or not, age is truly nothing but a number. I think I just quoted a bad r and b song.... Got some nice clothing to celebrate the birthday that was much needed, and a new Bengals cap as well, Ill wear that thing out Im sure.
A gift card to Borders will be used, and soon, I cant get enough of media items, books, music and more. I also scored a gift card to one of my favorite restaurants in town, (yes, im talking food again), Andys Mediteranean Grill here in Cincy.
Andy serves up some of the best chicken in town and all in a great atmosphere, complete with bellydancers and hookah smoking. Ill be feasting there tomorrow night with friends and family.
So, some friends at Asthmatic Kitty Records (Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond) asked if I would do a quick write up about Cincinnati, something in the top 5 mode. Of course, i chose food, as Cincy as some great and unique foods that others may or may not know about. Here is a link to the article.
And, here is the text, if you are the too lazy to click a link type.....
Top 5 foods you have to eat when in Cincinnati
1) Skyline Chilli - There are actually a couple competitors to the best chilli in Cincinnati throne, but Skyline is king. Cincinnati Chilli is different in that its got no beans and is actually a bit sweet, Three Ways (Chilli, Spagetti, Cheese) are a delicacy here in town, truly legendary.
2) Graeters Ice Cream - I used to have a boss that had this stuff shipped out to him in California a few times a year he loved it so much. In addition to tons of great seasonal flavors, the Black Raspberry Chip is amazing.
3) Montgomery Inn Ribs - While the south is famous for BBQ ribs, Montgomery Inn is a local legend. The ribs are great but its the sauce that caused Bob Hope to be a lifetime fan and endorser.
4) Gliers Goetta - Goetta is a breakfast meat, as if we dont already have enough here in "Porkopolis." Goetta is a german recipe made of pork, oats, onions, herbs and spices. Given the German roots here in the Nati, Goetta is big enough for two annual weekend festivals here in town.
5) Izzy's Corned Beef - The best reuben sandwich outside of New York can be found at any Izzys location in Cincinnati. A piled up Reuben with a potato pancake is a great lunch and they have been dishing them out here for over 100 years.
Thats certainly not a unique idea but I have no problem talking about sports. Im actually quite obsessed with the Cincinnati Reds, Bengals and fantasy sports in general. But I would be insincere if I didnt mention What If Sports and Gridiron Dynasty. If I had the time I would probably blog about my current teams and coaching achievements.
Anyway, if you havent checked out What If just yet and are a fantasy sports geek you should really give it a go. Email me and Ill get you started out on the right foot if youd like. What If is even based right here in Cincinnati! And last year the big boys from FOX came knocking about purchased them for a nice chunk of change. So go check em out, and also, check out the Reds hanging in there in the wild card race. Sure would be nice to taste the playoffs for the first time since 1995.
I knew the initial buzz of Vox would wear off and other priorities would take over, even so, here I am, back at it. It sure is a hot one in Cincinnati today. Got up to about 95 degrees in the sun and felt like almost that in the shade as well.
One thing about the midwest that is the most difficult is the humidity in the summer. Makes me want to never be far from air conditioning or a pool. I know that sounds picky and maybe they will revoke my man card for that statement but oh well.
Growing up I didnt mind the sun and thought a nice dark shade of skin would be the best look for me. I dont care about that anymore either. Sunburns and the threat of skin cancer someday are enough to keep me in the shade most of the time. Due to this stance, here is a great song by Jose Gonzalez, aptly titled. Stay in the Shade....
One of the staples of Cincinnati is the ice cream company known at Graeters. Im not a huge fan of sweets but I do enjoy some Black Raspberry Chip often. Its like the best ice cream Ive ever had. The mint chocolate
chip is also quite enjoyable.
I had a boss in a previous job that loved it so much that although he lived in California he had it shipped out to his home on
a regular basis.
The seasonal flavors are always good too, since its summer time you can go for a Watermelon Sorbet, a Tangerene Cream or cool off with their Peach Ice Cream.
Theyve been churning it out for over 130 years, so if youre in Cincy, you gotta have some.
Yeah so I know many people outside the Cincinnati area or probably the Midwest never made it past the title of this post. But the game also known to some out west as "beanbag toss" has become the thing to do here in recent years.
If youve been to a BBQ or any outdoor event you might know what I mean. I often have referred to the game as yuppie horseshoes. But in reality there isnt much yuppy about it. The scoring is the same as horseshoes mostly, but if you are actually interested, I guess you should go here.
I wont lie though, I find it quite fun and have been known to toss a bag from time to time. Its certainly a fixture at tailgating parties. Ahh, tailgating. Not long until my Cincinnati Bengals get ready to defend their division title of last year. Dont worry, ill be talking about sports here quite a bit.
Until then,
I cant resist at least trying out a new blogging platform. I like what I see here with Vox, very sharp. And while Im not spending time on Each Note Secure, I guess Ill do my best to comment on Cincinnati going ons here. I promise to stay away from politics, though when discussing a city I realize that will be tough.
I will also shy away from any WKRP references as thats just not a good idea. Well, here goes.....
